Warm Water Fishing Season

The summer heat has arrived! While Arizona’s lakes and rivers are warming up, so are the warm-water fish species. The lakes, ponds, and local canals are expected to come alive with the rising temperatures and monsoon storms. This month, anglers should primarily focus on carp (both grass and common varieties) as well as the ever-reliable Largemouth Bass. Early mornings at the Salt River are perfect before the influx of tubers. For carp, consider fishing any stretch of the SRP canals or the Crystal Gardens in Avondale. When targeting bass, effective flies include poppers, closures, baby fats, and, of course, crawfish patterns. For grass carp, use flies that mimic algae or moss; I often opt for a weightless olive or chartreuse leech. Stop by the shop and ask us for any specific details!
