Community Member Spotlight

Marti Monti

Our fly fishing community is made up of many wonderful people. These people love to fly fish, and they also love to contribute to the community. I am excited to introduce this months community member spotlight, Marti Monti. She is the smiling woman that for the last 4 years has helped out with our community events selling raffle tickets and donating Zirkels (which she invented), she is a committed contribution to the success of Casting for Recovery, and she loves to fly fish. Marti has an infectious positive attitude as a student of casting or while instructing as a Pickleball professional.
Marti is a gift to the world, and the Arizona fly fishing community is blessed to have her as a community member.

What does fly fishing mean to you? What about fly fishing offers you most satisfaction?

As a breast cancer survivor, I love how fly fishing places me in thriving mode not just surviving. It allows me to relax into the moment but also encourages me I to enjoy the challenge of learning how to improve and learn better and more successful ways to improve the art and science of fly fishing. Standing in a river, or floating in a lake is so healing and satisfying to just be still and be grateful for the moment at hand.

What does having AZ Fly Shop in the community mean to you? What do you like about AZ Fly Shop?

Az Fly Shop is so welcoming to anyone who visits their shop. The kindness that I felt the minute I walked into the shop quickly turned into feelings of trust and an atmosphere that encourages curiosity and opportunities to improve my ability for fly fishing.

Tell us your most memorable fly fishing story

My two sisters and I grew up fishing with our grandmother and has always given us very special memories. Her love of the outdoors has certainly passed on to us. One of my favorite memories happened while fishing with them a few years ago in northern Idaho close to Coeur D’ Alene. As I was fishing in a float boat in a large lake next to my sister In her float boat, she motioned for me to look up. I did and there was a bald eagle hovering above us eying a fish on top of the water. Suddenly the eagle dove toward the water, then stretched its legs fully out and grabbed the fish with its talons. Seeing the golden feathers revealed on the extended legs that are usually hidden was an amazing sight and fly fishing allowed me to experience that incredible moment.

Is there any advice you would share with the fly fishing community?
