If It Ain’t Chartreuse, It Ain’t No Use!

As we prepare for our 4th Annual “Valley of the Sun Carp Rally” we are giving you our top tips on catching the biggest & most fish in the rally this year.

Favorite Flies: Chartreuse Boobie Fly, Chartreuse Egan’s Headstand, Fulling Mill’s Carp Worm or Chartreuse Carp Tickler and Carp bitters. Gear Recommendations: Although some can manage with a 5wt rod, we recommend a 6-8wt for the most success and less stress on your gear. Make sure you have a fishing buddy and a large net to safely retrieve from ladders in the canals. (Fun Fact: Ladders in the canals alternate sides every 50 yards.)

Line, Leader & Tippet Set Up: Our favorite carping lines are SA Amplitude MPX and Rio’s Bonefish line, use a 12ft leader starting at 4x…some fish might require up to a 12lb leader and/or tippet.

How to know if you found the spot: Don’t waste your time on the picky fish. Best thing to do is find a stretch of canal where the fish are feeding. You’ll notice activity in the water, rising fish or schools moving by, often times fish will find themselves in pods and are mostly feeding on grass or mudding on the banks of the canal.

Everyone on our team fishes for carp…come by the shop and ask us where to go if you’re getting started or just need some advice on landing a “freshwater bonefish.”
