Community Member Spotlight

Kyle Roland

I love being connected to the Arizona Fly Fishing Community because of the people who make up the community. Choosing a member to spotlight each month is not easy, because the community is made up of amazing people. This month I’m very excited to introduce Kyle Roland as the Community Member Spotlight.
I have had the pleasure of being able to spend a fair amount of time on and off the water with Kyle. He is always willing help others with his experience, knowledge and he does it in a way that always leaves people feeling good about themselves. Kyle Roland is a gift to the world and the Arizona Fly Fishing Community is lucky to have him as a member.
Kyle and his wife Megan are expecting their first baby any day now. They are going to be amazing parents and I’m excited to watch their family grow.

What does fly fishing mean to you? What about fly fishing offers you most satisfaction?

Fly fishing is a blend of skill, patience, and connection with nature. For me it’s a rewarding experience that goes beyond just catching fish, it’s getting to spend time outdoors with good friends and family out away from everyday life creating lasting memories. The excitement of setting the hook and the moment of connection when you feel a fish tugging on your line is unmatched. The other part of fly fishing that is most satisfying to me is the progression and challenge it presents. The principles are the same but every day is a little different and you have to figure out the best way to catch fish that day.

What does having AZ Fly Shop in the community mean to you? What do you like about AZ Fly Shop?

Having AZ Fly Shop in the community has connected me to long lasting friends that I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise. I started going into AZ fly Shop as a customer and always felt that they were the most friendly and helpful fly Shop that I had ever been to. Not to mention they have all of the best gear and fly fishing stuff that any fly fisher dreams about. My interactions at AZ Fly Shop lead to me working part time at the fly shop. For me one of the most rewarding things is the interactions I had with people new to fly fishing and helping them get into the sport. The community that AZ Fly Shop has created is unmatched, I often see customers out at the salt river and other places. Whether you are an experienced fly fisher or new to fly fishing AZ Fly Shop will make you feel welcome.

Tell us your most memorable fly fishing story

I have had many memorable fly fishing trips and stories so it’s hard to pick one. One story that sticks out was my wife and I were up in the White Mountains fly fishing and we just got to a lake to fish. We pulled up and a group of guys getting off the water told us it was a tuff day of fishing and that they didn’t catch much. My wife got her float tube out and got into the water before me tied up with two dry flies. She wasn’t out there for a minute before I hear “I got one!” She caught several right away. The guys all looked out at her in disbelief. A few of them decided to go back out and fish.

Is there any advice you would share with the fly fishing community?

My wife and I are having our first baby any day now. Having a boy, Rhett Roland. By the time you read this he will already be here. Excited to have a little fishing buddy.
“My biggest worry is that when I’m dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.” – Koos Brandt
