Community Member Spotlight
Gary Haydon
Every once in a while, someone walks into the shop who instantly feels like they belong — not just because they love fly fishing, but because of the way they show up, ask questions, support others, and genuinely care about being part of something bigger. Gary Haydon is one of those people.
From day one, Gary has brought a true student’s mindset to fly fishing. He’s passionate, curious, and deeply committed to learning — always working to refine his skills, understand new techniques, and become a better angler. His love for the sport is obvious, and his willingness to grow within it is inspiring.
But Gary’s impact goes far beyond time on the water.
He has been a big supporter of AZ Fly Shop community events, trips, classes, and shop activities — consistently showing up, encouraging others, and helping strengthen the community we’re building. His positive energy and genuine kindness make him someone people enjoy fishing with, learning from, and calling a friend.
We’re incredibly grateful for Gary and the role he plays in making AZ Fly Shop more than just a shop — but a true community.
Thanks for being such an important part of the AZ Fly Shop family, Gary.

About Gary Haydon
At AZ Fly Shop, we’re lucky to be surrounded by people who remind us why fly fishing is about so much more than just fish. This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on Gary Haydon — a community member whose curiosity, enthusiasm, and genuine love for the experience embody what our shop and community are all about.
Gary’s fly-fishing journey began just a few years ago, during a period of transition in his life. After nearly 35 years with his company, he found himself looking for something new — something engaging that offered both challenge and the opportunity to travel. Fly fishing turned out to be exactly that, and then some. What started as an interesting pastime quickly grew into a passion rooted in strategy, learning, and connection.
“If you don’t fly fish yet, try it. Walk into AZ Fly Shop, meet the crew, and let them point you in the right direction.”
In just a short time, Gary has already built some unforgettable memories on the water. This past year alone, his travels took him to Brazil in pursuit of peacock bass and to the White River in northern Arkansas for brown trout — two trips that now rank among his most memorable fishing experiences. Along the way, he’s discovered that the real satisfaction of fly fishing comes not only from the catch, but from understanding the thought and intention behind every cast, drift, and decision.
When asked what AZ Fly Shop means to him, Gary doesn’t hesitate to mention the incredible selection of gear — joking that his lack of restraint often leaves his entire allowance at the shop. But beyond the rods, reels, and flies, it’s the people that stand out most. Through conversations in the shop and participation in sponsored trips, Gary has learned a great deal and formed connections that continue to fuel his excitement for the sport.
We’re grateful for anglers like Gary who bring curiosity, openness, and enthusiasm into our space. Thank you, Gary, for being such a valued part of the AZ Fly Shop community — we’re excited to see where the water takes you next.
