Oak Creek in Sedona

Late winter into early spring is a great time to target trout on Oak Creek. Flows can occasionally give the creek a little color, which often works in the angler’s favor. If the water is slightly off-color, fish tend to be more forgiving and willing to eat.

When the creek is running clear, success often comes from downsizing. Small midge patterns in sizes 18 and smaller are reliable producers. An attractor like a Radiation Baetis in smaller sizes can also be effective, either fished under a dry fly in the shallower runs or beneath an indicator through deeper pools.

A shorter, lighter rod—around a 7–8 ft 3–4 wt— is perfect for Oak Creek’s tight quarters and smaller water. Bringing waders can help increase your mobility along the creek, especially as we move toward the warmer days of early wet-wading season.

As temperatures begin to rise and daylight increases, keep an eye out for Blue Winged Olives, caddis, and adult midges, which can bring fish to the surface during the warmer parts of the day.

For leaders and tippet, 5x is a solid starting point, though 4x can work just fine when fishing attractors or in slightly colored water.
