Cinda Howard

Our fly fishing community is filled with amazing human beings. This month I am very excited to announce our community member spotlight, Cinda Howard.

I first met Cinda about 17 years ago while she was working at the Orvis Store in Scottsdale. I bought a couple of fly rods from her and she helped me with my casting. I’ve learned a lot about fly fishing from Cinda, and I’ve spent many days on the water with her. I loved stopping in just to talk fly fishing with her and mostly listen to her knowledge of the sport of fly fishing. I remember our conversations about her leaving the Orvis store and starting her guide business. I applauded her for her courage to pursue her passion in life. She had no idea if it would work or what it might look like and she took the leap. She is filled with contribution, compassion, and commitment to people. She has become the premiere guide service in the White Mountains of Arizona and in the process, she has taught thousands of people to fly fish. Cinda is a true gift to the fly fishing community and we have been blessed to have her be a part of our lives.

What does fly fishing mean to you? What about fly fishing offers you most satisfaction?

For me, fly fishing takes me to beautiful places. I am one with nature. I have also met some great people who I would have never met had it not been for fly fishing.

What does having AZ Fly Shop in the community mean to you? What do you like about AZ Fly Shop?

It is great to once again have a fly shop in the Phoenix area. It was missing for so long. It has created a place where us like-minded individuals can get together and share what we all enjoy. This shop is also about giving back to the community in ways that I have never seen in fly fishing. They are creating a great model that other shops should follow. 🙂

Tell us your most memorable fly fishing story

Have you ever been steelheading? I mean, after true west coast steelhead? I once took a group to the Rogue River in Oregon. I was fishing that day with a good friend named Rodrigo. This was his first time with a spey rod and after a quick lesson, we were off. Towards the end of the day, we were fishing this long run and if you’ve ever swung flies, you know that it’s cast, swing, two steps down river, cast, swing, two steps down river, etc. We were getting into a solid rhythm and you could feel the electricity in the air. We just knew we were going to hook up….and we did! We landed eleven steelhead that day….all on the swing. It was a great day. Once we got back to the lodge, it turned out that we were the only ones who caught fish that day. Just another great day on the water.

Is there any advice or quotes that you feel everyone should hear?

Be in the moment. Enjoy every second you are able to be on the water.
