Community Member Spotlight

 Greg Halvorson “Fish Whisperer

I’ve been fly fishing for 45 years. I have no idea how many days I’ve fished or how many fish I’ve caught during those 45 years. I am certain that I’ve caught enough fish for a lifetime, and I’m still pursuing the tug on the end of my line. I am also clear that my fly fishing is not about the fish, my fly fishing time is about everything that goes along with the experience, the build up, the adventure itself, the beauty of the environment that I’m in, and mostly the people I’m fishing with. I have built some amazing relationships through fly fishing.

This month’s community member spotlight is one of those relationships. I am very happy to introduce Greg Halvorson as the community member spotlight for the month of March, 2023. Greg Halvorson is a gift to the world, he has been a gift in my life. He is a stand for other people having great lives. We are lucky to have him as a member of our Arizona Fly Fishing Community.

Greg, thank you for being who you are in he world and all that you contribute to the world of fly fishing.

Tight Lines,

Chris Rich

What does fly fishing mean to you? What about fly fishing offers you most satisfaction?

Fly fishing was a getaway at first. A reason to get out of Phoenix in the summer. It has now become my therapy against life’s ups and downs. It has also introduced me to an incredible cast of characters in this world we survive in, some of which I consider my friends.

What does having AZ Fly Shop in the community mean to you? What do you like about AZ Fly Shop?

I love the sense of community at AZ Fly Shop.  I can walk in, grab a cold water, and just shoot the breeze with whoever is working or sometimes another customer.  I have met some pretty good people in the shop and at the open house events. I’ve even gone on to fish with some of ’em which is what this is all about.

Tell us your most memorable fly fishing story

Going to Lee’s Ferry for my first fly fishing trip. I caught my first rainbow trout despite insane winds blowing my tent away and tying me up in my own line. We ate that trout in the camp that night all by itself.

Is there any advice or quotes that you feel everyone should hear?

Let it go and lighten up.  Its not called catchin’.  Get out and explore and add to your story while helping others.

Is there anything else you would like to add or share with the community?

Tight lines y’all!!!
