Did someone say “CARPING ” ?

With the Valley of the Sun Carp Rally just around the corner, now’s the time to fine-tune your approach. Think of the canals like rivers—each stretch has different flows, structures, and species, so scout a few sections ahead of time. Don’t linger too long; if fish aren’t eating after 30 minutes, move on until you find active pods. Fishing with a partner pays off when it’s time to net, with one angler keeping pressure while the other climbs down for the scoop. Long leaders (12 ft+) help with spooky fish, fast current calls for reaction bites, and slower stretches favor dries or dry-droppers. Grass carp mostly key in on vegetation, while common carp will eat eggs, nymphs, worms, and more. Proven flies include Headstands, Mops, and Carp Ticklers—always good to have a mix on hand. With preparation, mobility, and a team-first mindset, you’ll be ready to chase down some of the hardest-fighting fish in Arizona and make your run for the podium.
