Community Member Spotlight

Bob Greco

If you’ve followed us from the beginning, you’ll remember when I was posting videos about a new fly shop in Phoenix. AZ Fly Shop was being built, and I shared the progress with weekly videos, about our progress. During that time, several fly fishers showed up and wanted to be a part of what was happening. One of those individuals was Bob Greco. He showed up as a positive energy and wanted to teach fly tying classes. After one interaction, he found a spot in the AZ Fly Shop community. Bob has been our primary fly tying instructor since the beginning. I hear from both beginner and advanced fly tyers, that Bob makes a huge difference with their fly tying ability. He brings a joyful twist to every conversation. He has been a fantastic contribution to the AZ Fly Shop community. Bob Greco is a gift to the world and we are thrilled to acknowledge him as the Community Member Spotlight this month.

What does fly fishing mean to you? What about fly fishing offers you most satisfaction?

Being one with nature and the fish are an obvious bonus! Knowing how the fish eat and bug cycles, it all takes me to another place. It’s a form of spirituality for me. It’s the beauty of it all.

What does having AZ Fly Shop in the community mean to you? What do you like about AZ Fly Shop?

When I left Rhode Island there was a shop I was very involved with. It’s a place to go to share information. Share knowledge. One of my most memorable times was when AZ Fly Shop opened in Phoenix. I drove over and met Chris, I was in some of the first videos put out the community. AZ Fly Shop is a place locally for people to share fishing stories, experiences and knowledge. I am grateful to be a part of exchanging knowledge and contributing to the fly fishing community.

Tell us your most memorable fly fishing story

I have had the great fortune of being happily married for many years and with that my wife would let me travel all over to fish. I have had so many wonderful experiences on the water all over the world however teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of fly fishing for me. I work with Veterans and teach fly tying classes at AZ Fly Shop, having the opportunity to share my knowledge with others is the best feeling in the world.

Is there any advice you would share with the fly fishing community?

In the years I’ve been fishing I have collected many books on fly fishing, and the one thing I would say is ‘You never stop learning’. Try to always learn and improve as you go! It’s not just fishing to me, it’s a way a life.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?

If you decide to start tying flies, it’s a way to engage in the full circle of fly fishing. When I tie I envision the flies being used to catch a fish. Tying your own flies is your way to be a more knowledgeable and well-rounded angler. It helps you better understand the life cycle and entomology.

Want to take a fly tying class with Bob? We offer a Beginner Fly Tying Class for those who are brand new to tying their own flies and Specialty Fly Tying Class if you are wanting to work on a specific fly or skill to become a better tyer!
