If you’ve been thinking about getting up to the White Mountains, now’s the time. With water levels still on the lower side ahead of the monsoon season, fishing conditions are best before the summer heat fully settles in.
The lakes are fishing well, especially during early mornings and evenings when temps are cooler. Lower water levels can concentrate fish, making for some solid opportunities if you’re covering water and staying mobile.
A 5wt is a great all-around choice here. Focus on:
Creek fishing is in a sweet spot right now before peak summer hits the mountains. Flows are manageable, and fish are actively feeding.
A 3–4wt (shorter rod) is ideal for tighter water and more technical presentations.
What’s working:
Keep it light and natural with 4x–5x tippet and focus on clean drifts through pocket water and seams.
Conditions are good—but timing matters. Getting up there sooner rather than later will give you the best mix of comfortable temps, active fish, and more consistent water conditions before summer really takes hold.
